Into the Metaverse

Interest in the Metaverse, a virtual space where users can interact, play and work has boomed over the past year, with China’s three largest internet companies, Baidu, Alibaba and TenCent, known collectively as ‘BAT’, racing to make their claim in virtual reality.

According to reports, Alibaba has a 10-million-yuan ($1.58 million) investment linked to their own Metaverse, while TenCent owns 40% of the gaming platform Epic Games which has already began building their own Metaverse platform.

Recruiters and employers have also begun exploring the possibilities that this new technology could have on the way we work in the future, with companies already discussing how virtual job interviews may become the hiring process of tomorrow.

Eco-friendly Tech and the Rise of AI

Following the outcomes of the COP26 summit in 2021, China pledged to peak its CO2 emissions by 2030 before making strides to reduce this figure and eventually hit carbon neutrality by 2060.

These goals may not be impossible however, as work towards them has already begun. The World Alliance of Universities on Carbon Neutrality (WAUCN) is a worldwide partnership of universities, research centres and scientific institutes which have joined forces to achieve climate change goals. Of this global enterprise, 15 top Chinese universities feature, providing strong ground for making a positive environmental impact.

Alongside these global endeavours, advancements in AI may provide a solution. According to a whitepaper reported on by OpenGovAsia, AI applications may be capable of cutting down carbon by 35 billion tonnes by 2060. Other uses of AI in technology will also undergo developments in 2022 as China implements greater regulations and governance around AI to ensure effectiveness, robustness and safety, measures that could have a global impact on how we use artificial intelligence.

Autonomous transportation

One interesting technology development focused on customer convenience is autonomous transportation, with 2022 marked as a year for new developments and increased market testing.

A range of self-driving vehicles are already in circulation throughout China, with WeRide, a global company dedicated to creating fully autonomous transport options having launched public trials of its new RoboBus services in the early weeks of 2022.

March 2022 will also see the first national standards for self-driving vehicles come into place in China, ranging from L0 (mostly human operated) to L5 (full driving automation).
